Frequently Asked Questions

What is naturopathic medicine? Back to top

Founded upon a holistic philosophy, naturopathic medicine combines safe and effective traditional therapies with the most current advances in modern medicine. Naturopathic medicine is appropriate for the management of a broad range of health conditions affecting all people of all ages.

Naturopathic physicians (N.D.s) are the highest trained practitioners in the broadest scope of naturopathic medical modalities. In addition to the basic medical sciences and conventional diagnostics, naturopathic education includes therapeutic nutrition, botanical medicine, homeopathy, natural childbirth, classical Chinese medicine, hydrotherapy, naturopathic manipulative therapy, pharmacology and minor surgery.

What is a naturopathic physician? Back to top

A naturopathic physician is a license primary care doctor who is clinically trained to diagnose and treat the same conditions that a general family practice medical doctor would. NDs are considered to be one type of an alternative medicine practitioner. A naturopathic physician uses herbal, homeopathic, and nutritional supplements to treat conditions as well as utilizing lifestyle counseling and lab testing to provide the most benefit to a patient’s needs. A naturopathic physician is always focused on finding the underlying root cause of an illness, rather than treating symptoms.

What is Chelation Therapy? Back to top

Chelation simply means to “grab on to.” Chelation therapy is any means by which substances are utilized to chelate, or grab onto, other substances that are toxic and need to be removed from the body. Chelation therapy can be either intravenous or oral. Generally people understand chelation in terms of utilizing something called EDTA that is utilized to improve circulatory health. EDTA chelation therapy is one of the forms of chelation I offer.

Why Choose a Naturopathic Physician After 50? Back to top

Many of us are living longer and expecting more from our lives. We want to remain active, mentally and physically, and have come to understand that the quality of our life depends upon our health. Adults in the 50+ age group visit naturopathic physicians for a variety of reasons.

The majority of my patients are between 55 and 80 years of age, both men and women.  Some come for specific health issues or disease conditions, others want to optimize their health and decrease the risk for familial tendencies and/or chronic degenerative diseases. Many are confused by the numerous prescriptions they take and are looking for natural alternatives. Many have questions about the vitamins and herbs they take and want guidance about them. They want information so they can avoid side effects, drug-drug and herb-drug interactions.

A naturopathic physician is the best choice for natural prevention and treatment of most health conditions faced by those over 50, including:

  • Allergies
  • Arthritis
  • Cancer
  • Depression
  • Diabetes
  • Digestive system conditions (colitis, constipation, diarrhea, gallbladder disease, heartburn, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers)
  • Fatigue
  • Heart disease
  • Hypertension
  • Mental/cognitive disorders
  • Menopausal symptoms
  • Obesity
  • Osteoporosis
  • Pain
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Prostate enlargement

Are you covered by my health insurance? Back to top

BBNC does not directly bill third party payers for insurance reimbursement. However, BBNC does contract with an outside medical billing agent to provide this service for our patients. BBNC provides your paid invoice along with a copy of your insurance billing information to the billing agent. The invoice is processed and billed electronically to your insurance company allowing for prompt processing and reimbursement by your insurance company.

Can you prescribe the medications I am taking? Back to top

Sometimes yes and sometimes no.

Naturopathic physicians in the state of Montana have a long list of pharmaceuticals we can prescribe, if we choose. However, those drugs we can prescribe are those of a natural origin, such as antibiotics and hormone therapy. If you have prescriptions that you must continue that I cannot write for, then I must work with your other doctors to keep them informed of your health care plan and progress to assist them with their decision making.

Ultimately, the goal is to improve your health so that you can eliminate some of your prescription medication.

Do you work with other doctors? Back to top

Yes, whenever possible, I collaborate with other physicians on your health care team. Each and every one of us has something of value to contribute and collaboration makes for the best health care.

Is a naturopath different than a homeopath? Back to top

Homeopathy is one of the modalities that a naturopath is trained to use. Homeopaths use only homeopathic medicines and are not necessarily primary care physicians.

Do you treat (name the disease)? Back to top

As a naturopathic physician, I treat the individual, not the disease. Patients often have a variety of symptoms that need to be addressed but each person will be given a different treatment plan that is tailored to their needs. Everyone has their own individual response to their environment and illness. Treating ten people for depression with one treatment plan is to ignore what makes them an individual. What works for one person may not work for the next.
